Eddie Betts watched the birth of his twin daughters on Facetime in the hotel lobby on Saturday morning after wife Anna went into labour earlier than expected.

With Anna’s blessing, Betts travelled to Melbourne with his teammates on Friday ahead of Saturday night’s clash with St Kilda at Etihad Stadium.

The Crows forward was on standby to make the short flight home if required, but as it turned out he didn’t even have time to get to the airport.

Anna phoned Eddie around three o’clock on Saturday morning to let him know she was having contractions, but reassured her husband that it would be a lengthy process and that she was okay.

However, things progressed more rapidly than the couple expected and at about 10am the girls were born.

“At about nine o’clock (on Saturday morning) Anna rang me and her waters had broken. I was freaking out and said, ‘Do you want me to get on the next flight?’ And she said, ‘Yeah’,” Betts said.

“Luckily enough, we had a great friend over there in Gabby. Gabby was fantastic and came and helped Anna pack her bag (for hospital) and another friend of ours, Josie, she’s like our nanny, came and picked up (sons) Lewie and Billy because we had no family there.

“Anna’s mum and sister were flying over on Saturday (afternoon) to step into my place if it happened, but they didn’t make it in time either!

“I was going to go back, but Anna said that the doctor said, ‘Thirty minutes and they’ll be out’.

“I said, ‘Okay then, I need to get Facetime’.

“The strongest Wi-Fi at the hotel was in the lobby, so I put myself into a corner in the lobby … and watched my beautiful daughters come out over Facetime.”

Betts had mixed emotions as the witnessed the birth of his twins, who won’t be named until after he’s had a chance to meet them on Sunday.

He was sad not to be there in person to support his wife and witness the special moment, but excited and relieved that everyone was safe and healthy.

The popular Crow was also apologetic to the selfie-hunter at the hotel with unfortunate timing.

“Some dude actually came up to me and tried to ask for a photo and I was like, ‘Wait, hang on! No’,” he said.

“I felt real bad because I was so rude to him, but I was watching (the birth of) my daughters.

“So, whoever that dude is, I’m sorry. But now you know why I said no, because my daughters were being born.”

Eddie and Anna kept the sex of the babies as a surprise throughout the pregnancy.

The couple was thrilled to welcome two little sisters for Lewis and Billy.

“I didn’t care what we had, as long as they were healthy,” he said.

“Now that I’ve got two boys and two girls, I think that I might stop!

“So Anna, stop! No more!”

There’s a baby ‘boom’ in progress at Adelaide.

Last month, David and Sarah Mackay welcomed their second child, daughter Lucy.

Sam and Izzy Jacobs, Andy and Emmalyn Otten, Tom Lynch and fiancé Courtney and Josh Jenkins and fiancé Hannah are also expecting this season.

Betts fell one goal short of kicking a goal for each of his children against the Saints.

After quiet couple of weeks on the scoreboard and a slight change in role, the three-time All Australian kicked three goals in Adelaide’s comfortable win.

Betts said it was nice to get amongst the goals again.

“The boys tried to give me one (a goal) for each of the kids. I’ll have to try again next week!” he said.

“Last week against Richmond, the reigning premiers, I had 20 disposals which is probably the highest I’ve had in two years. I laid a few tackles and set up a few goals … maybe I’ve got to stop passing them off!

“But (I knew that) if I keep doing what I’m doing, (applying) pressure, chasing and tackling and getting to the front of the contest with the big guys, then the ball will eventually come your way.

“Funnily enough, it did tonight.”
