Curtly Hampton says the Crows are determined to make a habit of winning, with the goal driven by a healthy but intense competition for spots in the Club’s best 22.

Adelaide was unbeaten en route to collecting the inaugural AFLX tournament trophy at Hindmarsh Stadium on Thursday night, a result Hampton put down to a collective determination to thrive every time the Crows take to the field.

“We want to make winning something that is a habit at the Crows,” he said.

“Whether it’s AFLX or winning games during the JLT (Community Series), that’s what we’re here to do, to win.”

The 24-year-old midfielder believes that a putting together a strong pre-season campaign would help in establishing a pattern of success leading into the Crows’ home-and-away campaign.

“We’re a competitive bunch of boys, we play to win. We want to create good habits around the Club.”

The Crows named an inexperienced squad on Thursday night, with five players yet to debut fielded in the deciding match.

That group - consisting of Lachlan Murphy, Patrick Wilson, Matt Signorello, Tom Doedee and Harry Dear - all performed well as the Crows outlasted a Geelong side boasting experienced duo Mitch Duncan and Tom Hawkins.

“I wasn’t really surprised, as our team goes so deep, from the top of the list down to the youngest player,” Hampton said.

“We pride ourselves on having good depth in our side, so anyone that goes onto the field and plays, we have full confidence in them that they’re going to get the job done.”

A healthy rivalry has remained a constant at West Lakes throughout the pre-season campaign, heightened by the addition of seasoned recruits Bryce Gibbs and Sam Gibson to the Crows list.

The consistently high training standards will undeniably mean a squeeze for spots in the side’s best 22 ahead of the Club’s season opener against Essendon at Etihad Stadium on March 23.

“There’s competition for spots, Round One isn’t too far around the corner,” Hampton said.

“We have a couple of JLT’s coming up, so for young blokes looking for a spot, it’s the perfect opportunity.”

Hampton was one of the standout players of the Adelaide AFLX tournament, with his blistering pace and ability to hit the scoreboard a common theme across all three Crows matches.

Despite his February form, he knows he’ll need to continue to build on a promising pre-season if he’s to remain in senior contention.

“Your spot is always going to be up for grabs, the Team is never the same every year,” he said.

“What I’ve learned coming to a good club like Adelaide is when you get the opportunity, you need to make the most of it.

“Everyone’s here for a reason, so I just have to work on bringing my strengths more consistently, and that’s what will get me a game."

Hampton was quick to point out the impressive Thursday night performances of several lesser-known team mates, singling out the efforts of 2015 National Draft pick Tom Doedee.

“Tom has grown so much as a player since coming here,” he said.

“He hasn’t played an AFL game yet, but he’s been learning off some of the best defenders in the league, and I think he’s ready to take that next step forward.

“There are spots up for grabs, but they’re not easy to get at the Crows. It’s a very competitive club.”
